Search engines
The Internet is vast with billions of web pages, and people can use search engines and type some keywords (e.g. car insurance which brings 164000 websites on google.ie with Ireland selected). The problem with registration is that each search engine is its own world, with its own rules and varying fees for each commercial website they accept (usually around $250 each). Search engine registration can be quite complex. There are companies out there who charge up to 5 digit $ sums for guaranteed good results. Other companies, the ones who make unsolicited phone calls or emails promise too much for too little, or ask a monthly or yearly fee, usually without any guarantees!
Pay per click
Most search engines (e.g. www.google.ie) have a pay per click scheme, which is very effective. Because you give them a number of keywords (e.g. BMW, used parts) and whenever somebody enters these keywords in google, a link to your website and a message of your choice will appear in a box at the side of/above of the search results. Try any popular keywords on Google and you will see many of these boxes. It works within 15 minutes of payment and is very cheap (starting from £5). Here's a link to advertise on google.
